Cornell University study: Whitetails can carry SARS-CoV-2 variants

Cornell University, in Ithaca, N.Y. has been studying the capability of white-tailed deer to carry SARS-CoV-2 variants. Researchers remain confident that whitetails are not transmitting the virus to humans. (Stock photo)

A Cornell University study of white-tailed deer in New York state has shown the animals can carry SARS-CoV-2 variants, a virus that was once widely prevalent in humans but today is no longer found.

It’s unknown whether whitetails can serve as long-term “reservoirs” for the variants; scientists say more time is needed to determine that.
