Gov. J.B. Pritzker has chosen a former state representative from southern Illinois as the next director of DNR.
Natalie Phelps Finnie will replace Colleen Callahan, whose last day was Jan. 16. Callahan, who had been on the job since 2019, was the first female to lead DNR. Finnie will be the second.
While Finnie’s appointment still needs State Senate confirmation, she comes with experience that Callahan did not have – she has spent the past year as DNR’s deputy director under Callahan.
Before joining the IDNR in 2021, Finnie was a State Representative in the 118th House District. She is the daughter of former U.S. Representative David Phelps.
