Winter lake observations indicate situation normal

Early-winter fish kills are somewhat rare. However, sometimes fish will get in a jam if they inadvertently swim over a dam, into a shallow pool, and are trapped. That occurred at the outlet of Lake Nokomis a couple of years ago, and the trapped fish were dominated by carp. They were removed in spring. A similar incident was reported below the dam at Lake Minnetonka in December. (Photo courtesy of Steve McComas)

If winter temperatures stay low during the next couple of months, lake ice should get stronger, but as is always the case, assume there is some bad ice lurking somewhere out there.
