State record turkey harvest appears safe — for now

It’s come to a final push for turkey hunters up and down the state. South zone hunters wrap up their spring turkey season today, while north zone hunters begin their final week before the season closes May 11.

As of this morning (May 4), a total of 14,648 birds have been harvested.
The state record of 16,605 is still in reach, but it will take a massive effort in the northern counties to hit the record, which was set in 2006.
