American woodcock sightings — and soundings — a rite of spring in Michigan

When it comes to the American woodcocks, Michigan leads the nation – in amount of woodcock surveying done and number of woodcock hunters and harvested woodcock. (Michigan DNR)

Woodcock are a popular game species in the United States, and in Michigan approximately 26,000 upland bird hunters target them, leading the nation in both the number of hunters and birds harvested.
