Outdoor News Deer and Turkey Classic: It’s only just begun
The opening of the 2017 Outdoor News Deer and Turkey Classic didn’t disappoint.
And it’s only just started.
Some were hoping it could have started even earlier.
Dozens of eager attendees packed the gate area in anticipation of the opening of the show Friday in Warner Coliseum at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul.
When the gates opened at noon Friday, attendees were treated to a good variety of exhibitors and presenters. Deer are the headliners of the show, with huge buck mounts dominating the landscape inside the toasty Warner Coliseum on this chilly March day in the Twin Cities.
The Classic also features everything wild turkeys, but there’s more to it than whitetails and gobblers. There was trout fishing for the kids (the Wild Trails Kids Zone, too), even fat-tire bikes. And among the presenters is Bernie Barringer, who shared insight on bear hunting with his “How to Bait Big Bears” seminar Friday.
Barringer is among about a dozen presenters who will continue with seminars Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday is the big day of the Classic: Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday’s hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the show culminating with the awards ceremony from 3-5 p.m. Sunday. (The popular antler-scoring opens at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.)
Other presenters again Saturday and Sunday include the headliners, the Holder family from the Outdoor Channel’s “Raised Hunting,” along with Tony Peterson, Jeff Fredrick, Ron Spomer, Joel Nelson, Dick Alford, Win Mitchell, Mike Dukart, John Molden and the Whitetail Property Pros.
