DULUTH AREA
Shiner minnows have been the hot walleye bait on Boulder Lake in 10 feet and Island Lake in 12 to 15 feet. Rice Lake is giving up walleyes and northern pike in 6 feet and a few crappies can be had during low-light periods at the narrows on Fish Lake over 14 to 16 feet.

ELY AREA
Most lakes have 10 to 12 inches of ice, but there hasn’t been a lot of people fishing. Most anglers have just started to venture out with a few returns of decent northern pike action in the bays of Birch Lake.

GRAND MARAIS AREA
Walleyes have started hitting on South Fowl Lake in 6 feet, Devil Track Lake in 4 to 10 feet, Cascade Lake in 10 to 12 feet, Deeryard Lake in 6 to 8 feet, and Elbow Lake in 4 to 6 feet. Northern pike spearing also has been strong on Devil Track in 2 to 6 feet.

MORA AREA
Knife Lake is kicking out crappies in 8 to 10 feet and Fish Lake is producing sunfish and crappies in 6 to 8 feet. Look to Ann Lake for walleyes and crappies in 6 to 9 feet during the evening hours. Chubs are turning northern pike at Knife in less than 8 feet.

VIRGINIA AREA
Waxworms are producing buckets of smelt over 60 feet of water on the Gilbert Pit. Sucker minnows and tip-ups are providing consistent northern pike action on Murphy Lake and Pleasant Lake. The local walleye bite has been slow, with most reports coming off this end of Lake Vermilion.
