BREAKING NEWS: DEC deer plan includes youth hunt

Albany — DEC's five-year deer management plan has kept intact a proposed three-day youth deer hunt over the Columbus Day weekend, set for this fall pending final regulatory approval.

Public comments on the proposal are being received through May 21.

The plan also includes an Oct. 1 opening date for the Southern Zone archery deer season; expanded antler restrictions in several wildlife management units in southeastern New York; altering the Northern Zone muzzleloader and firearms deer season starting dates "up to one week later in certain years" to increase bowhunting opportunities and accommodate the youth deer hunt in that zone; allowing DMPs to be used during the Northern Zone archery and early muzzleloader seasons; and establishing a late archery season in the Northern Zone to parallel the late muzzleloader season.

Look for further details in the April 20 issue of New York Outdoor News.
