NC: Wildlife Commission Offers Summer Camp on Becoming an Outdoors Diva

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 5, 2012) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will offer a free weeklong day camp for young women ages 13-17 at its Centennial Campus Center for Wildlife Education on June 25-29. Becoming an Outdoors Diva is modeled on the popular Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program for adults.

“Teen girls can learn some of the same skills found in The Hunger Games, only in a fun, relaxed setting,” said Ann May, a wildlife education specialist with the Wildlife Commission. “Campers will build self-confidence and self-reliance while learning more about survival skills, wildlife conservation and outdoor recreation — without the distraction of having boys around.”

Becoming an Outdoors Diva will take place on the Centennial Campus of N.C. State University, including Lake Raleigh. The daily camp times are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Teens must apply in advance. Admission is based on their response to a wildlife questionnaire.

Activities include:

– How to use a bow and arrow

– Survive in the woods by building a shelter

– Use a map and compass

– Trap and release small mammals

– Start a fire without matches or lighter

– Catch and cook a fish

– How to tie a fly and fly casting

– Cook and eat game meat

“This camp will bring out the ‘outdoor diva’ in young women who enjoy nature,” May said. “Then, at the end of the week, we will hold a version of the ‘Amazing Race’ where campers become contestants, putting their new outdoor skills to use.”

The Centennial Campus Center for Wildlife Education is one of four learning centers operated by the Wildlife Commission. The center is located on the first floor of the Wildlife Commission headquarters at 1751 Varsity Drive on N.C. State University’s Centennial Campus in Raleigh. Interactive exhibits at the center highlight Piedmont wildlife species and habitats.
