Maryland: Assateague State Park and campground to reopen

Other Maryland State Parks Opening on Case by Case Basis

The Maryland Park Service (MPS) has reopened Assateague State Park
after closing it due to Hurricane Irene. MPS reopened the
campground on August 31. Campers with reservations that began
before August 31 may return to the campground at 8:30 a.m. but must
check-in at the Ranger Station office upon arrival. Campers with
reservations beginning August 31 may check-in beginning at 2
p.m.

“We are happy to report that Maryland’s State Parks made it through
Hurricane Irene without injuries or significant damage,” said
Maryland Park Service Superintendent Nita Settina. “Maryland Park
Service employees are hard at work, doing everything possible to
get our State Parks back up and running in time for the Labor Day
weekend.”

Several Maryland State Parks have already reopened. Park staff
continues to work through the challenge of tree damage and power
outages in some of the harder hit regions to reopen the remaining
parks.

MPS will update the status of the State Parks at
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands. Park visitors can also contact MPS
customer service at 1-800-830-3974 for updated information.

Maryland’s State Parks not only provide great outdoor recreation
for Marylanders and visitors, they are also a great asset to State
and local economies. According to a recent study, conducted in
partnership with the Maryland Department of Business and Economic
Development, the Maryland Office of Tourism Development and the
Maryland Association of Destination Marketing Organizations,
Maryland State Parks have an estimated annual economic benefit of
more than $650 million. In 2010, visitors directly spent more than
$567 million locally – $25.56 locally for every dollar the State
invests in State Parks -during their visits. And almost 95 percent
of visitors had their expectations met or exceeded during
visits.
