Labrador deemed most popular U.S. dog, again

New York (AP) — The Labrador retriever is America’s most popular
purebred dog for the 18th straight year.

The American Kennel Club says more than twice as many labs were
registered in the U.S. in 2008 than the year before. That means the
breed will probably retain its “most popular dog” title for the
indefinite future.

The rest of the top 10 canines are the Yorkshire terrier, German
shepherd, golden retriever, beagle, boxer, dachshund, bulldog,
poodle and shih tzu.

The kennel club says the bulldog returned to the list as No. 10
last year after an absence of 70 years, and has since jumped two
notches.

The kennel club turns 125 this year.
