Pierre, S.D. The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission recently changed daily black bass limits to three daily for lakes Enemy Swim (including Campbell Slough), Roy, Cochrane, Clear (Marshall County), and Pickerel in northeastern South Dakota.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2005, anglers will be allowed to take a three-fish daily combination limit of smallmouth and largemouth bass. The new regulation includes a protected slot size restriction of 12 to 18 inches, and of those harvested daily, only one may be 18 inches or greater. St. Paul (AP) Seven more sites in Minnesota have been designated as “Important Bird Areas” by the National Audubon Society as part of an effort to bring attention to critical places for birds suffering from habitat loss.

The areas include a string of sites on Lake Superior’s North Shore, Felton Prairies Complex, Itasca State Park, Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge, the Lower Minnesota River, Springbrook Nature Center in Fridley, and Murphy-Hanrahan Park Reserve in Savage. Madison, Wis. Preliminary Wisconsin DNR reports show that the 2004 fall turkey hunt was successful for many hunters. According to Andrea Mezera, assistant DNR upland wildlife ecologist, the DNR issued 78,900 permits for the 30-day hunt that ran from Oct.

Last fall, hunters registered 12,466 birds; this year’s numbers are expected to be up slightly. Early reports point to a harvest close to 12,500, or a success rate at or above the state yearly average of 16 percent. Wisconsin’s spring turkey applications are due Dec. 10 and cost $3.
