St. Paul The new DNR Enforcement Division chief was sworn in on Monday, as Col. Mike Hamm took the oath of office at the State Capitol. Hamm has been a conservation officer for 26 years, and has been with the DNR since 1972 when he began as a parks worke

Hamm was selected after a nationwide search. DNR Commissioner Gene Merriam said Hamm was selected because of his knowledge of DNR Enforcement operations and because he understands the importance of maintaining strong connections with the Minnesota outdoor community. He also brings a wealth of experience to the position, Merriam said.

St. Paul The 2004 Minnesota Migratory Waterfowl Stamp Contest is near, as the DNR will begin accepting entries Aug. 25, 2003. The entry deadline is Friday, Sept. 5 at 4 p.m. The winning design will be used for next year’s state waterfowl stamp.

Two species are eligible for the 2004 stamp, the white-winged scoter and the common merganser. Contest judging is Sept. 11. Designs may be mailed to the DNR’s main office at: 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN 55155-4007, or they may be delivered in person. Despite the annual spread to more lakes, DNR officials encourage boaters not to become apathetic about precautions they should take, as there are thousands of waters in the state without Eurasian watermilfoil. Eurasian watermilfoil now infests 145 Minnesota lakes, wetlands, and rivers. The first Minnesota discovery was made in Lake Minnetonka in 1987.
