Duluth, Minn. The cold, damp weather throughout Minnesota has a bright side. It has delayed this year’s expected outbreak of forest tent caterpillars, although the first wave of worms is expected to hatch any day now as long-dormant trees finally sprout

Last year’s largest-ever crop of forest tent caterpillars turned into moths in July and those moths laid lots of eggs. Those eggs have been snug in foam-like egg clusters on tree branches all winter. “It’s pretty well timed so they hatch just as the first aspen leaves come out,” said Mike Albers, forest pest expert

St. Paul The Minnesota DNR is seeking nominees for a “Motorized Trail Task Force.” The task force will advise the DNR and the Legislature on future off-highway vehicle policy in Minnesota, under legislation recently signed into law.

DNR Commissioner Allen Garber will appoint the task force, which will make recommendations to the 2003 Legislature. The task force will include representatives of both “motorized” and “non-motorized” interests. It’s anticipated the task force will meet perhaps twice monthly for the remainder of the year. USFWS federal agents bust ring of exotic animal killers

Chicago Six Chicago residents, a Wisconsin man and a Lockport, Ill., exotic meat store have been indicted on federal charges for allegedly violating various wildlife protection laws by trading and killing endangered species, primarily tigers and leopards, and trafficking their skulls, hides, and other parts.
