Zimmerman, Minn. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is preparing a Comprehensive Conservation Plan for the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge in Sherburne County, which will guide management of that refuge for the next 15 years.

To encourage public participation in the planning process, an open house wil be held at the refuge on Tuesday, May 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Wednesday, May 30, from 6-9 p.m. Both will be held at the Old School House, located on Sherburne County Road 9, 5.5 miles west of Highway

Harvest slot moves higher. . .

Anglers may keep somewhat larger walleyes when fishing Mille Lacs this season. The 2001 walleye regulations include a 16- to 20-inch harvest slot, with one walleye over 28 inches allowed. The new harvest range is up from last season’s 14-18 keeper zone. Put another way, Mille Lacs anglers must now release all walleyes under 16

Des Moines Nonresident deer hunting license applications are available until May 27 through Iowa’s Electronic Licensing System. Applicants may call (800) 367-1188 to apply for a license by phone.

A nonresident deer license costs $151, a habitat fee is $6, and there is a nonrefundable $5 application fee. The number of available licenses is the same as last year when there were 6,000 “any-deer” licenses, and 1,500 “antlerless-only” licenses available. Regular gun seasons run Dec. 1-5, and Dec. 8-16. The bow season is Oct.
