The following report is a compilation of state and federal wildlife manager reports and waterfowl surveys from across Minnesota. This is the first report for 2018. Reports will be compiled weekly throughout the hunting season.
District 1 – Baudette area CO Eric Benjamin (Warroad) worked ATV, AIS, big game, small game, and waterfowl enforcement. Grouse hunters took to the forests this past weekend, but with the foliage still quite thick,
Last spring, numerous cooperators and 40 citizen-scientist volunteers surveyed 65 routes throughout the northern conifer forest region of Minnesota. Spruce grouse sign was found at 88 sites representing 32 percent of those surveyed.
Wetland habitat conditions are variable across the state, with some dry conditions in the northern portion of the state, for Saturday’s opener.
The survey results through the end of August indicate catch rates were still quite good this summer, but were lower than last year.
