Wind, snow, sleet or rain don’t stop turkeys from being turkeys

When mating season arrives for wild turkeys, harsh weather does little to halt their spring breeding activity.
When spring gobbler season opened in Pennsylvania April 29, I found myself huddled against a medium-sized white pine tree as the darkness of night was beginning to fade in the eastern sky. Rain was falling, and the gathered moisture on pine needles dropped heavily on my hat.

Persistence pays off with a huge rainbow on rainy Mentored Youth Trout Day in Pennsylvania

Chilled and hungry, we agreed we’d stay until 11 a.m. and then pack it up to go over to the main pavilion for lunch. With minutes to spare, we noticed a subtle bump in one of the rod tips, and then a steadier pulse, indicating a strong bite.
With the hook set, Foster started reeling in his fish just like the others, but it seemed to be taking more line. Suddenly, it jumped to the surface with an abrupt splash, and we both saw it was a much more sizable trout than the others.

Rainbow trout: A welcomed invasive to Pennsylvania

I was surprised to read an article recently that characterized the rainbow trout as an invasive species throughout much of the world. In my youth, local stocked streams received lots of both brook and rainbow trout. I don’t recall brown trout being a part of the mixture, although friends and I knew of some local small creeks that held wild brown trout, smaller flows that were not stocked.

Shad restoration efforts in the Susquehanna River continue

As part of an effort to restore American shad in New York, DEC Fisheries staff, in collaboration with the PA Fish and Boat Commission, recently stocked 322,000 American shad fry into the Susquehanna River in Endicott.
As in previous stockings, fish were marked so if they are recaptured, DEC staff will be able to obtain useful information on fish growth, movement, and stocking success.
