DNR fisheries biologists believe the lake currently holds a half-dozen saugeye that would top the current state record of 9.68 pounds.

Given that it’s open year-round for fishing, it should seem appealing to ice anglers. It is, with a few catches.

Chalk Hills supports a good fishery with evidence of natural reproduction for several species. The walleye and smallmouth populations appear strong.

Walleyes and smallmouth bass are the main draws at Johnson Lake, although its northern pike and whitefish populations are worth noting as well. While limited, you might even catch the rogue lake trout here.
