Most anglers target yellow perch and smallmouth bass when they head to Alpena County’s Long Lake, but anglers also catch good numbers of walleyes, panfish, northern pike, and even some healthy bullheads.

The big draw, however, is the trout fishing in the spring.

Yellow perch are one star. Multiple surveys done by Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission biologists over the past 15 years – as well as angler reports – indicate a lot of them reach nice sizes.

It’s a good-sized lake at nearly 1,000 acres that includes decent structure, plenty of deep water, and ample forage that allows its walleyes to maintain strong numbers.

DNR survey shows highest walleye count in 37 years.
