BEAVER DAM / FOX LAKE AREA On Fox Lake, guys are looking at 7 to 9 inches of ice, and they’re fishing deeper water for crappies. Walleyes and northern pike are hitting in shallow water.
The weather was generally windy and stormy this report period, keeping many boats tied to the dock. Boaters who did make it out took advantage of the last two weeks of the striped bass season.
No hard-water opportunities yet in the popular spots like Saratoga Lake and Round Lake. And Lake George always offers up a late freeze, often not until January. So not much to report right now.
The folks at Big Wave Sport and Tackle in Mahopac/Westchester Archery report that fishing is starting to pick up on most of the reservoirs, with Gleneida, Gilead, West Branch and Croton Falls all yielding brown
Willowemoc and Beaverkill: Both rivers are fishable at last look and actually abnormally low for this time of year. There were still a few Olives and midges around but sub-surface is the way to fish.
St. Lawrence River: Not hearing anything yet on the ice fishing front, but that could change at any time. Black Lake: Some ice fishing was taking place as of last week, notably on Rollaway Bay,
Lake Ontario and tributaries: Burt Dam and Eighteen Mile Creek were still holding fair numbers of trout. Best bait was a jig tipped with a wax worm and fished under a float, but egg sacs
