Steve Carney: Coming upon a crash site, and a fishing tip

A number of years ago at about this time in December, I was in far western Minnesota, spending the day predator hunting with then-Outdoor News editor Dave Greer.
We were tooling down a rural gravel road while glassing drainage ditches when we came over a rise and couldn’t believe our eyes. We’d come upon a horrific traffic accident that had just happened.

Steve Carney: Shotgun for Christmas? Here are some thoughts

I’ve had the pleasure of carrying almost every brand of shotgun. Thinking about that, I came up with a list of the brands I have used over the decades: Beretta, Benelli, Smith-Wesson, Browning, Ruger, Remington, CZ, Franchi, and my first shotgun in high school, the venerable Ted Williams-Sears 12-gauge pump.
Many hunters will be asking Santa for a new shotgun for Christmas, so here are my thoughts on styles, along with some recommendations.

Steve Carney: Store your boat properly, avoid spring headaches

Sadly, the open-water fishing season is over and it’s time to store our boats and accessories.
We were fortunate to have warm weather through November that kept a lot of us on the water much later than normal in Minnesota. Here are some tips to properly store your boat for the winter season as we head into December.

Steve Carney: My Minnesota duck season was not pretty; and a November to remember for walleyes

The Minnesota duck season is ending soon (it ended Nov. 25 in the north zone, and it ends Nov. 30 in the central zone and Dec. 7 in the south), and once again, it was not pretty for this writer. I thought last season was a bust, but this season was probably the worst season ever.
For the first time in 55 years of waterfowling, I didn’t shoot a single teal. Not one!

Steve Carney: November is a time for river duck hunts and walleyes

The cold weather has finally arrived in Minnesota, but it seems the migrant ducks haven’t headed south. I recently received two reports from some Canadian friends who said there are a lot of ducks still lingering in the fields there, which means within a couple of weeks something should happen for us here.

Steve Carney: Curiosity killed the doe on a second chance

At this time of November, I typically grab my plastic doe decoy (Eunice) and head to my usual soybean field. A doe decoy works wonders during this month, because it gives any deer on the fringe a sense of security because they see a mature doe already in the field.
A few days ago, I had a fantastic experience with a huge doe.

Steve Carney: Better times lie ahead for pheasant hunters, and a Minnesota fall fishing update

The good news this week is that pheasant hunting will continue to get better as we head into early November. It’s been a bit frustrating of late, as pheasant hunters are faced with lots of standing corn in Minnesota. But that soon will change.

Steve Carney: Impressed by local bow shop, and a goose jerky recipe

The owner of Prairie Archery in Parkers Prairie, Jon, was amazing. He asked me to step up and shoot on the 20-yard range, and he watched my form (my form is not textbook, by any means), and he quickly evaluated that my poundage was too high. He said my support hand was shaking, which is an indication of too much draw weight.
