Steve Gilbert: A close look at the world record yellow perch
All the excitement surrounding the “super-monstrous” 17-inch, 3.01-pound yellow perch coming out of Green Bay on Feb. 11 piqued my fisheries curiosity.
News outlets lamented the fact that though these fish were big they did not come anywhere near the world record yellow perch. The two most respected keepers of fish records, the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame, of Hayward, and the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), list the same record-holding fish, a 4-pound 3½-ounce perch caught by Dr. C. C. Abbott in May 1865.
