Western Minnesota land acquisition team honored by Otter Tail County Pheasants Forever

The Otter Tail County Pheasants Forever chapter in west-central Minnesota recently honored the Fergus Falls Wetlands Acquisition Office, which supports Otter Tail County and lands throughout the state, with the chapter’s Longtail Award. Since 2018, the Fergus Falls Wetlands Acquisition Office has acquired more than 32,000 acres of wildlife habitat including nearly 10,000 acres of waterfowl production areas.

Pennsylvania Game Commission boosts doe tags by 147,000 for 2023-24

Pennsylvania game commissioners, at their quarterly meeting here April 15, voted to increase the number of antlerless deer licenses available to hunters this year by 147,000.
Commissioners announced that 1,095,000 antlerless deer licenses will be allocated statewide for 2023-24, which is up more than 15% from the 948,000 licenses allocated for 2022-23.

Prescribed fire to be used in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny National Forest this spring

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service plans to use prescribed fire as a forest management tool during April and May in the Allegheny National Forest. Exact dates are not set yet.
Operations are weather dependent, and prescribed fires will be implemented at the optimal time to achieve the best results.

Ohio’s South Zone hunters to get season’s first shot for turkeys

A popular spring tradition since 1966, Ohio’s wild turkey hunting seasons began in mid-April, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. This spring, hunters will benefit from two years of above average turkey hatches.
Each summer, the Division of Wildlife collects information on young wild turkeys, called poults. Brood surveys in 2021 and 2022 show above average results that will benefit Ohio’s wild turkey population numbers this spring.

Groups send letter to state senators opposing wolf hunt ban in Minnesota

Eleven big game and outdoors-focused organizations on Thursday sent a letter to Minnesota state senators opposing language that would ban wolf hunting in the state. 
On Monday, Rep. Peter Fischer, DFL-Maplewood, offered an amendment to House File 2310, the 2023 Environment, Natural Resources, Climate, and Energy Omnibus Bill, to prohibit an open season for taking wolves. The amendment passed 69-57.
