Taxidermist program led to Indiana’s first CWD discovery

A wildlife effort shared by the National Deer Association and Indiana DNR helped find the first confirmed case of chronic wasting disease in an Indiana deer last month. The Taxidermist Incentive Program pays $10 to Indiana taxidermists for every sample they collect from deer and submit for CWD testing. A participating taxidermist submitted the deer that tested positive in LaGrange County.

Show promoter Michael Hauser wins New York State Outdoor Writers’ Pass It On award

Michael Hauser of Johnstown, N.Y., was named the 2024 Pass It On Award winner by the New York State Outdoor Writers Association at its annual conference in Oswego held May 30-June 2.
Hauser, promoter of the Adirondack Outdoorsman Show for nearly 20 years, has been “passing on” the outdoor tradition for many year and he was finally recognized for his efforts.

Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies contacting trappers to take part in survey

Trappers across the country, including those in New York, may soon be asked to participate in the latest Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies national survey.
The AFWA, in partnership with Responsive Management, is conducting a national survey: the fourth iteration of the survey which was previously conducted in 1992, 2004, and 2015. The goal of this study is to capture important information about trapping and trappers in the United States.

New York Outdoor News contributing writer Charles Witek of West Babylon, (Long Island), was honored with the M. Paul Keesler New York Outdoor Citizen Award June 1, 2024 when the New York State Outdoor Writers Association held its annual conference in Oswego May 30-June 2.
The award is presented to an individual or organization that has effectively raised the public’s awareness of outdoor recreational opportunities and conservation issues in New York State.
