Zimmerman, Minn. An 18-year-old man died when the snowmobile he was riding plunged through thin ice on a frozen lake in central Minnesota.

Tyler Nelson was snowmobiling on Lake Fremont with a friend when he went through the ice. Justin Birkholtz, 20, rode his snowmobile across the ice to a residence on the lake and got a rowboat, according to the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Department. Birkholtz pulled the boat back near the open water and pulled Nelson out.

Editor Politicians, farmers, and conservationists are surfing a new Internet data base that lists the federal farm subsidies paid to individual farming operations throughout the United States from 1996 to 2000. The nonprofit Environmental Working Group acquired the data with a Freedom of Information request and posted it on its web site, www.ewg.org, Nov. 6.
