A couple of columns back, I wrote about the incidence of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) in deer in the Buckeye State.
At that time, a couple of deer were out for testing for the possibility of EHD. Checking in with Mike Tonkovich, the ODNR Division of Wildlife’s deer program administrator, reveals that there has been just one case of confirmed EHD in deer this summer with that specimen coming from Franklin County in Central Ohio.

Saugeye minimums poised to come off the books in Ohio

If the Ohio Wildlife Council votes approval, there will no longer be a minimum length limit for keeper saugeyes on a long list of lakes throughout the state.
The council will consider the measure to remove the 15-inch minimum on saugeye, sauger, and walleye at its regular meeting on Oct. 30. The lakes on the list include Acton Lake, Alum Creek Lake, Atwood Lake, Buckeye Lake, Caesar Creek Lake, Ferguson Reservoir, Findlay Reservoir 1, Findlay Reservoir 2, Indian Lake, Metzger Reservoir, Piedmont Lake, Pleasant Hill Lake, Rocky Fork Lake, Seneca Lake, and Tappan Lake.

Another good year expected when Ohio’s archery whitetail season starts Sept. 28

It should be another banner season for archery deer hunters in Ohio.
That is the word according to Mike Tonkovich, the ODNR Division of Wildlife’s deer project administrator for Ohio Outdoor News’ annual deer archery preview.
“If you’re looking forward to seeing lots of deer and possibly harvesting a nice buck it’ll be a great season for you,” Tonkovich said.

Ohio Insider: Oregon initiative shows the threat to hunting, fishing, trapping is real

The proposal, first introduced in 2022, would have removed all animal cruelty exemptions, in essence criminalizing all hunting, fishing, trapping, animal husbandry, pest removal, and more. The sportsmen and farming communities rallied against the proposal with the support of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF).

Delta reservoirs provide decent bass fishing in Fulton County, Ohio

The two reservoirs in this northwest Ohio city supply nice, clear drinking water to the city of Delta, but neither will make anyone’s list of top fisheries.
Relatively small at 39 and 50 acres, respectively, Delta Reservoirs No. 1 and No. 2 serve as an outlet for nearby Toledo anglers traveling just west of the metropolitan area.

Ohio Insider: So far, so good on the EHD front for Ohio deer this year, but it’s still early

Things are relatively quiet along the epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) in deer front in this midsummer writing for Ohio.
So says Mike Tonkovich, the ODNR Division of Wildlife’s deer program administrator, in a short note to me in late July. Tonkovich said one deer from Logan County was headed to the lab to test for EHD on the very day that I e-mailed him (July 30) to check on disease status in the state.
