A day afield with Gary Clancy: turkey lessons learned and passed along

Ten years ago on a crisp April morning, my father-in-law, Gary Clancy, and I were rummaging through his old “huntin’ shed,” methodically tracking down some gear for a day of catch-and-release fly fishing.
As we were sifting through the tangled web of outdoor gear, searching for one of his nymph boxes and a match to his other hip boot, I found an unopened package with a set of turkey calls. Because I was an aspiring new turkey hunter with my first hunt quickly approaching, I asked if I could use the turkey call set so I could practice for the upcoming season.
