Minnesota’s ice season still cruising despite recent warm-up taking some toll

Talk of deteriorating ice usually doesn’t occur until mid-March. During a normal year, hard-water conditions certainly wouldn’t be an issue in February, but Mother Nature already has created challenges on select lakes in some parts of Minnesota.
For starters, let’s be clear: The ice fishing season is nowhere close to an end, and anglers continue to hit the ice in all corners of the state. But a string of warm days in January and another week-long stretch of 50 to even 60 degrees (in the southwest) during the second week of February took its toll on shorelines and access points.

Itchin’ for a brawl? Meet Lake Alexander’s bass, muskies in central Minnesota

When fishing experts use words such as stable, consistent, reliable, and productive to describe a lake, you can be confident that it’s full of fish-catching opportunities.
Such is the case with Lake Alexander, one of Morrison County’s premier fishing destinations. The above description, and more words like them, do not overstate the obvious: Alexander is an exceptional fishery.

You can hang your hat on Blackwater Lake’s bass fishery near Longville, Minn.

Blackwater Lake near Longville is just 771 acres in size, but when it comes to spots to fish for bass in this neck of the woods, it has to be near the top of any list.
It’s not just because Blackwater supports both largemouth and smallmouth bass populations, which it does; that in itself is a pretty big draw. But, the most noteworthy factor here is the lake’s high bass numbers and the impressive size structure of those fish it kicks out on a consistent basis.

Cannon Lake’s forage making gluttons of its walleyes, bass in Minnesota’s Rice County

By itself, Rice County’s Cannon Lake is 1,593 acres in size. Combine it with Wells Lake, which boaters can access from Cannon beneath the Highway 12 bridge, and you’ve got more than 2,200 acres of water to fish. That’s a pretty good-sized fishery for these part of southern Minnesota.

Fatty forage means big muskies, walleyes, and bass in Minnesota’s Wabedo Lake

Like so many lakes in the Longville area, 1,226-acre Wabedo Lake is an excellent multi-species lake. Panfish, northern pike, and largemouth bass are all caught here with some consistency, but its muskies, walleyes, and smallmouth bass usually garner the most angling attention.

How to crack January’s mid-season walleye code

Walleye movement and feeding activity naturally slows as the ice fishing season advances. Consistently catching numbers of walleyes becomes more difficult as their feeding windows shorten and the deep freeze sets in, but it’s not an impossible mission.

They may not be big, but fish are plentiful in Minnesota’s East Battle Lake

You typically don’t hear a lot about East Battle Lake in Otter Tail County, but it’s not because this 1,978-acre system is not a good fishing lake. East Battle just kind of gets lost in the shuffle in an area that’s rich in exceptional, fish-producing lakes that cover the gamut of fish species.
