When passing through Hackensack, don’t bypass Birch Lake in Minnesota’s Cass County

Cass County’s Birch Lake is located just off the main drag in downtown Hackensack. Despite being located in town and featuring an excellent city-owned public access, the 1,267-acre lake is not extremely pressured from a fishing standpoint.
Birch hosts quality panfish and largemouth bass, along with decent numbers of walleyes. But it doesn’t seem to receive the attention one might think it would.

Like pike? West Two Rivers Reservoir has size, numbers in Minnesota’s St. Louis County

Located near the town of Mountain Iron in St. Louis County, West Two Rivers Reservoir is a unique fishery for several reasons.
The 713-acre system is an old reservoir, man-made in the 1960s to provide a water supply to the MinnTac taconite-processing facility. It’s mainly a shallow reservoir, especially the north end, and it includes five inlets that drain local wetlands and an outlet that flows to the St. Louis River.

That’s exactly what Lake Belle Taine offers.

Sharp anglers know Knife is walleye, panfish destination in Minnesota’s Kanabec County

Located a few miles north of Mora in Kanabec County, Knife Lake is one of the area’s more popular fisheries with local anglers. With the Knife River flowing in and out of it, this 1,266-acre lake is basically a reservoir that offers limited depth but a variety of healthy fish populations.

Top baits for icing winter panfish

So is there a single bait option that works best for catching panfish through the ice? That’s a loaded question, which doesn’t have just one definite answer. The problem (OK, it’s not really a problem) is that anglers have several options, and they all seem to catch fish. Crappies, bluegills, and perch are aggressive feeders that have no problem chewing on a wide range of jigs and lures.

Minnesota’s 2023 fishing opener could be worth the wait

On paper, the 2023 Minnesota fishing opener looks like it should be a good one. That wasn’t the case just a couple of weeks ago when ice still covered a large portion of the state’s lakes, with some serious concerns across northern Minnesota.
But with four days of summer-like temperatures in mid-April and an extended stretch of extremely windy conditions shortly thereafter, most of the ice disappeared before everyone’s eyes.

Walleyes and leeches: A little history of fishing with this popular blood-sucking bait

Catching walleyes with leeches has been around for decades, yet compared to minnows and crawlers, they’re still a relatively recent bait. Here’s some history behind how leech-fishing tactics started.
Bait leeches are readily available these days across the walleye range. You walk into a bait shop, put down your money, and purchase them by the dozen or in bulk amounts.
