Panfish and walleyes in Pickerel, but what dominates this Minnesota lake in Otter Tail County? Bass!

Centrally located in lake-rich Otter Tail County, Pickerel Lake is an excellent choice if you’re looking to catch some bass – both smallmouth and largemouth. Once noted primarily for its ability to consistently kick out walleyes, Pickerel’s bass numbers might currently overshadow its reputation as a walleye producer.

Odd spring bodes well for early-summer anglers in Minnesota this year

As Minnesota anglers transition into the summer fishing season, there still seems to be a hint of spring in the air – and water – with what’s going on as far as fish-producing angling patterns across the state.
Despite record early ice-out dates and an extremely warm March, much of April and May remained relatively cool. Now, into the third week of June and a little more than one month into the game-fish season, fish activity has been all over the place. It’s been quite a spring.

Uff-da: There’s sure a lot to like about Scandinavian Lake in Minnesota’s Pope County

A backroads drive along the southern edge of Pope County is relaxing. Development is minimal, and along the way you’ll encounter plenty of agricultural land as well as mature woods, swamps, associated wildlife, and a handful of what would be considered lesser-known lakes.

Anglers have reason for high hopes entering Minnesota’s May 11 fishing opener

Anticipation for this year’s Minnesota fishing opener Saturday appears more amped than in recent years. But that’s to be expected, given that most anglers had few chances to wet a line last winter due to poor ice conditions statewide. Meanwhile, a wet and often windy spring has limited crappie-fishing opportunities.

When passing through Hackensack, don’t bypass Birch Lake in Minnesota’s Cass County

Cass County’s Birch Lake is located just off the main drag in downtown Hackensack. Despite being located in town and featuring an excellent city-owned public access, the 1,267-acre lake is not extremely pressured from a fishing standpoint.
Birch hosts quality panfish and largemouth bass, along with decent numbers of walleyes. But it doesn’t seem to receive the attention one might think it would.

Like pike? West Two Rivers Reservoir has size, numbers in Minnesota’s St. Louis County

Located near the town of Mountain Iron in St. Louis County, West Two Rivers Reservoir is a unique fishery for several reasons.
The 713-acre system is an old reservoir, man-made in the 1960s to provide a water supply to the MinnTac taconite-processing facility. It’s mainly a shallow reservoir, especially the north end, and it includes five inlets that drain local wetlands and an outlet that flows to the St. Louis River.

Sharp anglers know Knife is walleye, panfish destination in Minnesota’s Kanabec County

Located a few miles north of Mora in Kanabec County, Knife Lake is one of the area’s more popular fisheries with local anglers. With the Knife River flowing in and out of it, this 1,266-acre lake is basically a reservoir that offers limited depth but a variety of healthy fish populations.
