State hunters see high success rates during Wisconsin’s recently-completed elk season

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) celebrates the completion of the 2025 elk hunting season. The state’s eighth managed elk hunt opened on Oct. 18 and concluded Dec. 19.
“This elk season marks another rewarding hunt for 13 lucky state hunters,” said Christina Kizewski, DNR Central Elk Zone biologist. “The opportunity to establish a close relationship with the elk hunters and witness the excitement each one had was very special.”

Canada geese test positive for avian influenza at Iowa’s Green Valley Lake, Lake of Three Fires

H5 avian influenza has been confirmed in Canada geese at Green Valley Lake and at Lake of Three Fires, Iowa wildlife officials announced on Thursday.
Staff with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) collected dead geese for testing at Iowa State University’s Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. Results were available late Wednesday.

Mystery solved: Elusive cougar cubs documented again in Michigan

Nine months after two cougar kittens were documented in the Upper Peninsula, a new trail camera photo indicates the elusive animals are still alive and living with their mother.
The Michigan DNR verified a Dec. 6, 2025 photo of an adult cougar being followed by two kittens down a snowy trail in central Ontonagon County. The last time the kittens were documented – in early March – they were only about two months old and their mother was not in sight, raising concerns about the kittens’ survival.

The Department of Natural Resources stocks fish in Michigan waters every year, providing fishing opportunities and helping maintain healthy ecosystems.
