In Minnesota’s southeast and elsewhere, CWD sampling simply part of the hunting experience

A cool breeze was blowing as I began the long hike in the dark to my deer stand. It was opening morning of the firearms deer season in southeastern Minnesota, and I was looking forward to some treestand time.
From the activity around our small town the past few days, it appeared there was no shortage of excitement and anticipation for the upcoming hunt. And for good reason. The firearms deer season, and the hours leading up to it, brings a lot to the region.

Paddling to your duck spot? Here are ways to be more successful

A drake wood duck blazed past me as I leaned against an old cottonwood tree that stood alongside a narrow slough in the Mississippi River bottoms of southeastern Minnesota. I shouldered my 12 gauge and swung and shot as it passed by, dropping the bird into the water.
A moment later, a second woodie followed the same path, only to meet a similar fate. With two birds on the water and no dog to do the dirty work for me, I climbed into my kayak and paddled out to retrieve them.

Beating the heat, bugs for a Minnesota doe on the bow opener

By the time I found the big doe, it was well past dark. Stars were shining brightly and the only sound was the occasional bark of a farm dog in the distance.
Tracking the deer had taken longer than I’d expected, despite my strong suspicion that it was a good hit. That’s how it works sometimes. As hunters, it’s our responsibility to do our best to find and honor the animals that we kill.

Drifting along Minnesota’s Driftless Region makes for great kayak fishing

My jerkbait skipped across the turbid water as I cast into a well-known river in the Driftless Region of southeastern Minnesota. The lure came to rest under a low-hanging limestone shelf, and I let it float for a moment before twitching it ever so slightly.
My cast was intentional. A brilliant morning sun pierced the water, prompting fish to seek refuge in any shade offered by rock ledges and overhanging riverbanks and trees. Then, the water erupted as a chunky smallmouth bass inhaled my lure.

Fishing on Minnesota waters of the Mississippi River features good friends, great days

Gently-rocking waves and a hot midafternoon sun had nearly put me to sleep when my fishing rod bent sharply and began to quiver. This was no snag or hapless clam, both of which I’m accustomed to hooking on the bottom of the Mississippi River.
Instinctively, I jumped from my seat to simultaneously pull the rod out of its holder and to set the hook as my reel began to whine.
