Is AI the answer to sizing up the Illinois deer herd? If nothing else, the technology may at least help wildlife managers figure out a way to get a better handle on the population.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale is helping DNR better monitor the state’s deer by conducting a study on the best method to determine population density. The research combines boots-on-the ground field work with the latest artificial intelligence applications.

Professor from Southern Illinois University debunks legend surrounding redband trout

There’s a legend in the Missouri Ozarks that a train from the Wild West carrying the now rare McCloud River redband trout derailed. To save the fish, railroad workers released them into the nearby rivers. These fish were supposedly the ancestors of today’s rainbow trout.
Now nearly 150 years later, researchers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale are debunking that myth.
