Holloway Reservoir sports ample variety for anglers in Michigan’s Genesee County

Located seven miles northeast of the city of Flint on the Genesee/Lapeer county line, Holloway Reservoir provides great fishing in an area with a large population and a relatively limited number of public lakes.
There are just nine lakes in Genesee County with 100 acres or more surface water and some of them are private. At 1,973 acres and seven miles long Holloway Reservoir is by far the largest lake in the county and offers public access.

Outdoor Observations: Isle Royale wolf euthanized after showing a reliance on human food sources

Opportunistic. That best describes how most animals feed. While carnivores certainly will work a kill for dinner, if they can find an easier meal source from people, they’ll take it – again and again and again.
Apparently that’s what happened on Isle Royale National Park this summer, and in the end it resulted in the demise of a wolf there. The remote island, which is 45 miles long and 9 miles wide, rests in Lake Superior about 55 miles northwest of the Keweenaw Peninsula’s Copper Harbor. It’s accessible only by boat or sea plane.

Michigan waterfowl numbers appear down from 2024

Locally produced duck and goose numbers were both down this spring in Michigan and those effects are likely to be felt by waterfowl hunters this fall. Biologists, however, believe the early teal season and goose hunting should both be pretty solid.
Waterfowl hunting begins Sept. 1 with the start of goose and early teal seasons.

Outdoor Observations: Social media reaction sours experience of setting Michigan’s new flathead catfish record

We live in a world heavily dependent upon social media.
For many of our readers this is a far cry from how we grew up. It really wasn’t that long ago when you caught a nice fish, tagged a buck, or limited out on grouse, you took a couple pictures, brought the film to the local drug store and dropped it off, then waited a week to 10 days for the pictures to return.

Diverse fishery brings anglers back to Big Seven Lake in Michigan’s Oakland County

Supporting healthy populations of largemouth bass and bluegills, and supplemented by a stocked walleye fishery, Oakland County’s Big Seven Lake provides variable angling opportunities.
If you’re seeking good fishing in southeast Michigan in close proximity to other family-oriented amenities you’ve hit the jackpot with Big Seven.

Spotty mast crops should bode well for bait hunters during Michigan’s 2025 bear season

All preliminary indications point to another good bear hunting season this fall in Michigan.
According to the DNR, bear populations are stable to growing across the state and hunter success has been very good in recent years.
“In the Upper Peninsula we’ve been allowing the population to grow gradually and we’ve been successful in doing that,” DNR wildlife biologist Barb Avers told Michigan Outdoor News. “In the northern Lower we’re at the point where bear numbers have really been increasing so we increased the harvest there and are seeing some stabilization.”

Outdoor Observations: Michigan DNR names new deer, elk and moose specialist

Congratulations to Brent Rudolph, the new deer, elk and moose specialist for the Michigan DNR.
Many of you might remember Brent since he worked for the DNR for 18 years, much of that time spent as a deer research biologist and the deer and elk program leader. He announced last week in a Linkedin post that he’d started a new job as the deer, moose, and elk management specialist with the DNR.

Healthy panfish, bass fisheries on Lake Templene in Michigan’s St. Joseph County

Lake Templene is known for its healthy panfish fishery, but the bass population is pretty good, too.
With bluegills growing at a rate of an inch above the state average, it’s not tough to figure out what game fish is the most popular in the St. Joseph County’s lake.
