Michigan gun hunters tag nearly the same amount of deer as last year

Michigan deer hunters reported a harvest of 135,963 whitetails during the 16-day firearms deer season, which ended Nov. 30. That includes 85,942 bucks and 50,021 antlerless deer reported through mandatory online registration.
That total is down less than 1% from the reported firearms harvest in 2023, according to the DNR.
“Overall, I think the season went pretty well,” DNR’s acting deer, elk and moose specialist Chad Fedewa told Michigan Outdoor News. “The (harvest) numbers were up substantially in the U.P.”

Outdoor Observations: Economic impact of sportsmen and women in Michigan and elsewhere never ceases to amaze

The economic effect we have via our passion for outdoor recreation never ceases to amaze me. Most of the general public along with most of our Michigan and federal legislators really have no idea how important sportsmen and women are for the economy.
The commentary by the Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation detailing a recent survey of spending certainly underlines this fact.

‘Herculean effort’ boosted recovery of lake trout in Lake Superior

Following decades of rehabilitation efforts by multiple jurisdictions, native lake trout populations have been fully restored in Lake Superior.
That’s the message the Great Lakes Fishery Commission’s Lake Superior Committee (LSC) announced late last month in marking a major milestone in fisheries management and conservation.

Anglers find a diverse fishery at Tippy Dam Pond in Manistee County, Mich.

The Manistee River watershed is one of the largest watersheds in Michigan, draining a total of 1,780 square miles of land in 11 counties. The river meanders through seven counties on a course of about 250 miles in the northwest Lower Peninsula. It eventually drains into Manistee Lake, then into Lake Michigan.

Outdoor Observations: EHD impacts Michigan hunters in some areas as reported harvest goes over 170,000 after opening weekend

Conversations leading up to the Michigan firearms deer season between my hunting buddies and I often focus on how hot the rut is, what stand each of us is going to sit in on Nov. 15, and if we’ll have good tracking snow for opening day. In past years, the possibility of snow was about a 50/50 bet but in recent years those odds have slipped precipitously. Snow on Nov. 15 is rare these days in the southern Lower Peninsula; possible but I wouldn’t count on it in the Northern Lower; and possible but not guaranteed in the Upper Peninsula.

Michigan bear hunters see season similar to last year’s

Despite unseasonably warm weather throughout much of the season, bear hunters in Michigan reported good success.
“Overall, we had really good hunter success across the state. We heard positive reports about the number of bears at baits. Weather and mast didn’t seem to negatively impact bear activity, and bears are in good condition going into dens,” Cody Norton, the DNR bear specialist, told Michigan Outdoor News. “I think it was a really solid bear season.”
