How to decide what mid-October buck sign is worth hunting

The key to beating the October Lull is often to hunt scrapes. While most hunters sit this time period out, a better bet is to scout out scrapes located in security cover. Bucks still move during daylight hours this time of year, but they often won’t get to the open fields during legal shooting hours. They will visit a scrape though, as long as it’s a low-risk option. There is a point in October where the woods have changed, but most hunters haven’t gotten the strong urge to put in serious hunting effort.
Commonly referred to as the lull, the time before the pre-rut kicks in can be frustrating. This is often due not to the misplaced belief that all of the bucks are nocturnal, but instead because bowhunters often try to force a September food source strategy into a time window when there are better options.
