Land purchase opens pathway to public access at Illinois’ Orient Bottoms Fish and Wildlife Area

At least 35 bird species have been observed on the newly acquired property, including great blue herons, red-bellied woodpeckers and bald eagles. (Stock photo)

The Conservation Fund has purchased 346 acres in southern Illinois that will provide public access to the state’s newest fish and wildlife area while expanding opportunities for hunting, fishing and wildlife observation.
The acquisition will help resolve access issues that have kept the 1,728-acre Orient Bottoms State Fish and Wildlife Area closed to the public since DNR acquired the property in 2024.
