New York hunters prepare for ticks as deer seasons open

Once significantly less common in colder northern counties of New York, Lyme disease has now been documented in every county in the state with Suffolk County having the most documented cases.
“They have to do something about these ticks,” Schoharie County resident and avid sportsman Eric Haslun implored to a friend on Long Island after landing in the hospital from a bout with Lyme disease this summer. With over 20,000 cases of Lyme disease documented statewide in 2025, health officials have declared tick borne illnesses to be a health crisis.
