Nature Smart: Rebounding pelicans

The American white pelican nearly vanished from many states decades ago, done in by habitat loss, human disturbance, and DDT. Since the 1970s – thanks to wetland protection and DDT’s ban – populations have rebounded across the northern Great Plains and Midwest, proving that nature can heal when given a real chance. There are some birds that seem almost too improbable to be real.
The American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) is one of them. With a wingspan stretching nearly 9 feet and a bill that’s absurdly oversized, this is a bird that’s hard to mistake for anything else. Yet despite its enormous size, white pelicans fly with astonishing grace.
