After combing the bottom of the Shenango River in western Pennsylvania for two weeks, divers found what they were looking for: one of the rarest mussel species in the state.
A single, live round hickorynut mussel – a female – was located between the Pymatuning and Shenango reservoirs in Mercer County, sparking optimism that more will be discovered in subsequent surveys next year.
