What each Lake County first-grader received this year – about 2,600 or so students in all – was a one- to two-year-old white pine seedling, each one about 10 to 12 inches long. The seedlings are packaged in a clear plastic sleeve, the root ball in growth medium and wrapped in a biodegradable envelope.
