State legislation would protect black bears in Iowa

HF 175, which recently passed the Iowa House, establishes a civil penalty and fine of $2,500 for anyone killing a black bear in Iowa. Currently, the black bear is not protected under Iowa law. (Stock photo)

At this time, there is no evidence of bears reproducing in Iowa and no active research is being conducted by the IDNR since the bear is not listed as a species that can be monitored. If HF 175 passes and is signed into legislation by Gov. Kim Reynolds, the possibility for oversight through formal research exits.
