Minnesota’s homegrown brook trout strain shows first signs of success in metro streams

This summer Minnesota DNR east-metro fisheries crews found natural reproduction of the new stocked MN Driftless strain of brook trout in the South Branch and in Trout Brook in Washington County. Stocking of the new strain began in 2023 in the South Branch and in 2024 in Trout Brook. Several streams in southeast Minnesota have been stocked with the new MN Driftless strain of brook trout. DNR crews found young brook trout in two east-metro streams this summer, proof that the new MN Driftless strain, bred from Minnesota’s remnant native brookies, is reproducing on its own just a few years after stocking began.
