Anyone in the market for a new boat or new boat motor has suffered from sticker shock. In many instances, today’s price is double what it cost just 15 years ago. Since 2016, inflation accounts for about half the price increase, but increased emission standards mandated for marine engines account for the other half.
As long as gasoline (or diesel) remains the fuel powering these engines, don’t look for that cost spiral to diminish. But another fuel for boats (and other conveyances) struggling to meet exhaust emission standards could be hydrogen.
