The World Musky Hunt (WMH) celebrated it 50th anniversary in Wisconsin with a big turnout of contestants, past “hunters,” and guides, who fished lakes in Vilas and Oneida counties Aug. 27-29.
Founded in 1977 by Harold Mares, Andy Andel, and Wayne Papini, and patterned after Lander Wyoming’s One-Shot Antelope Hunt, the World Musky Hunt aims to “immortalize that tremendous game fish and allow the rest of the world to know and understand the great sport of musky fishing, as well as promote the beautiful state of Wisconsin.”

The maker of high-quality optics is on the outskirts of Barneveld, an Iowa County town with a population of about 1,400 that sits 30 miles west of Madison. The complex is adjacent to the 1,000-acre prairie owned by the Nature Conservancy and nearby Southwest Wisconsin Grassland and Stream Conservation Area. Mickella Nofsinger, Vortex associate marketing communications manager, led a tour of writers attending the Outdoor Writers Association of America annual conference in Madison on a behind-the-scenes tour of the huge facility.

Here’s why: you are chasing everything from young-of-the-year birds still living with their mommies, all the way to adult gobblers that don’t have any hormones messing with their ability to avoid danger.
