Mike Schoonveld: Descending devices — the best way to release fish showing signs of barotrauma

Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh, what a relief it is. That is a catchy jingle Alka-Seltzer used decades ago to help double its sales. I think of it at this time of year – and at times during the ice-fishing season – when deepwater anglers on the Great Lakes and inland lakes catch fish from the depths.
When a perch, walleye, lake trout or other fish is pulled from deep water, its swim bladder expands until it inflates like a balloon, squeezing the bejeezus out of the fish’s internal organs.

Minnesota DNR HQ moving to different St. Paul digs

Minnesota DNR headquarters will look a bit different next year as the agency prepares to move after more than 40 years at its current location.
Jess Richards, assistant DNR commissioner, said planning began two years ago for the move as the agency looked at new options in St. Paul. Effective July 1, 2027, the DNR headquarters will move to 10 River Park Plaza, located a couple miles south of its current location.

Michigan conservation community remembers Dr. Howard Tanner

Howard Tanner, the acclaimed fisheries biologist and conservation leader whose vision helped transform the Great Lakes and created one of Michigan’s most important recreational fisheries, is being remembered for a legacy that continues to shape the region more than a half-century after his groundbreaking work began.
Tanner, a Michigan State University College of Agriculture and Natural Resources alumnus, died Aug. 16 at the age of 102.

Commentary: It’s time for some serious ‘trash talk’ in Michigan’s UP

It’s time for some trash talking in Michigan.
Specifically, garbage receptacles at many UP waysides, rest areas, and scenic turnouts maintained by the Department of Transportation that are supposed to provide residents and visitors convenient places to put garbage at these locations to keep them litter free. During recent years, the large metal barrels with heavy metal lids that used to be present have been replaced with brown box-shaped metal containers that are supposed to be bear-proof.

Decades after it was shot, Boone and Crockett Club verifies historic whitetail as largest U.S. typical buck

It took 32 years, an electrician’s sharp eye and a painstaking Boone and Crockett Club verification process to reveal what Illinois hunter Sam Aiuppa had been keeping in his basement. The largest typical whitetail ever taken in the United States.
The B&C Club officially certified Aiuppa’s 1991 LaSalle County buck at 207-7⁄8 inches, putting the long-forgotten Illinois deer ahead of the legendary Jordan buck by 1-6⁄8 inches and into second place worldwide among typical whitetails, behind only Milo Hanson’s 213-5⁄8-inch world record from Saskatchewan.

Bait barrels and early baiting a focus at Michigan Bear Forum

Michigan DNR wildlife division staff are opposed to legislation regarding the use of bait barrels for bear hunting, according to DNR Bear Specialist Cody Norton.
House Bill 6242, introduced by State Rep. Phil Green, was a central topic at the Michigan Bear Forum held in St. Ignace on Aug. 22. The forum is composed of representatives of various hunting organizations, the Michigan Farm Bureau, beekeepers and independent bear hunters. The goal is to provide input to the DNR about all aspects of bear hunting in the state. The majority of forum members also were opposed to HB 6242.

Tom Venesky: A slam-dunk opportunity for hunters, anglers in Pennsylvania

Perhaps the biggest appeal about hunting and fishing is the challenge.
It’s not always easy to shoot a grouse rocketing through hemlocks or finesse a bucketmouth bass through a tangle of lily pads. It’s the challenge that keeps us coming back, and it’s also an aspect that other states have tapped into as a way to create an interesting quest for hunters and anglers.
