Pro Hunting Tip of the Week: Keep the phones in the pocket this bear season

A blaring ringer has saved many a bear’s hide since smartphones have become popular. It’s even cost me a shot at a bear once. As a guide for over 20 years, I’ve seen the advance from pocket games to smartphones. My advice to my hunters is to turn them on silent and put them away.

Patrick Durkin: Wisconsin’s Ben Gruber campaigns for wardens’ healthy work culture

Assembly candidate Ben Gruber thinks the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has a detached, centralized command structure that ignores an often-toxic work environment for Wisconsin conservation wardens.
Since January, Gruber has been on leave from his DNR law-enforcement duties and his role as union president of Conservation Wardens Local 1215. That’s because he’s the Democratic candidate for the 51st Assembly district in southwestern Wisconsin and will face Republican incumbent Todd Novak in the Nov. 3 election.

Second New York DEC public archery range open at Black Creek Marsh WMA

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced the opening of its second public archery range, this one at Black Creek Marsh Wildlife Management Area in Voorheesville, Albany County.
The new range is the first of 13 new archery facilities to be constructed statewide with DEC’s five-year, $3.1 million federal Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration grant, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Office of Conservation Investment to provide safe, accessible, and high-quality opportunities for outdoor recreation.

How far is too far to shoot in waterfowl hunting? Answer these three questions

In my ideal waterfowl hunt, every bird is backpedaling over the decoys and we’re taking our shots at 20 yards. Sometimes it works out that way, but usually, sooner or later, a bird skirts the spread, or it flares quickly out of the hole on a stiff wind, or it passes over the top of the blind, and the 20-yard shot becomes a 40-plus-yard shot.
Before you stand up and pull the trigger, you have to decide how far is too far. Your effective range in the field depends on primarily three factors.
