Western New York mourns the death of Capt. Hans Mann, a carver and muskie master, at age 46

Capt. Hans Christian Mann, of Alden, N.Y., considered a mountain of a man in all aspects of the phrase, passed away Aug. 6 at the age of 46 after a long illness.
Mann was known as a talented and caring human being who passed away during what should have been the prime of his life. He made a mark that will impact a legion of family, friends, and a fishing community for years to come.

No muskies, but Anvil Lake has walleyes, bass and panfish for Wisconsin’s Vilas County anglers

It might be difficult to imagine that a 400-acre lake in Vilas County wouldn’t have a few muskies swimming around in it, but that appears to be the case with Anvil Lake, which sits about 9 miles east of the popular vacation town of Eagle River.
That probably doesn’t matter to most anglers, though, who find Anvil’s walleyes, panfish, smallmouth bass and largemouths reason enough to fish the lake’s clear waters.

Nature Smart: Interstellar navigators

Most birds nest in spring or early summer, but some remain busy raising young well into late summer. American goldfinches are a familiar example, timing their nesting to coincide with an abundance of the small seeds used to feed their young.
Another bird that may still be tending a nest is the indigo bunting (Passerina cyanea). This small, seed- and insect-eating member of the cardinal family is highly migratory. It arrives relatively late in spring and remains through late summer before heading south.

Backyard and Beyond: Nature’s lush season

High tech is coming to the world of bird feeding, with cameras that automatically snap photos of bird feeder visitors. I had to laugh when I first saw Tim Szymanski’s photo of a young screech owl that stopped by one evening to see if there was anything for owls in such a feeder.

A 35-year-old Racine County Sheriff’s Department deputy faces four felony charges after letting his 3-year-old daughter trigger a shot that wounded a 40-year-old turkey-hunting mentor and the man’s 7-year-old son April 12 during Wisconsin’s two-day youth-only turkey season.
James D. Lehman, of Union Grove, was charged Aug. 17 in Racine County Circuit Court with two counts of second-degree reckless injury with a dangerous weapon, and two counts of injury by negligent use of a dangerous weapon.
