Minnesota’s breeding ducks bounce back in spring survey

Duck hunters will have to wait a few weeks before they get to sample the early stages of the fall flight, but an increase in spring duck numbers could mean better hunting early in the year compared to last year.
Although estimated wetland abundance in 2026 remained below historical averages (This year was only slightly above 2025 estimates), duck numbers increased 63% from last year, according to the recently released 2026 Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey conducted in May by the Minnesota DNR.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says ‘no further action’ on tiling issue around wetland easements

A groundswell of public input has temporarily halted the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s plans to revisit its rules around drain tile setback calculations, according to a post the federal agency made on X (formerly Twitter) on August 14.
“The Fish and Wildlife Service thanks the more than 200,000 commenters who responded to the request for information on the process for calculating setbacks for the drain tiles around the wetland easements,” reads the post.

A look at a waterfowler’s gear wish list heading into the 2026 season

My house was quiet. The kind of quiet that screams something is terribly wrong.
I walked into my rental at high noon ready to eat lunch and instead got a belly full of high crimes and canine misdemeanors. In fact, my black Lab, Buddy, a cocksure youngster at the time, had committed an act so heinous, so treasonous, that even Gandhi might have opted for Old Testament justice rather than high-minded forgiveness.

Christine Thomas: ‘Predators’ stalk little cabin’s outhouse

“Did you open the door to the outhouse when you had Major out to the little cabin for a run yesterday?” I inquired of Stan when we were headed back from a trip to Appleton.
He had not. I was curious about this as I had encountered a new phenomenon in the outhouse a couple of weeks ago. I was out to the little cabin with our Airedale, Major. I do this many afternoons if I do not have other obligations.

New smartphone app caters to New York’s Salmon River anglers

Todd William loves to fish New York’s Salmon River fall salmon and trout runs, but living in Vermont makes it tough to keep up with conditions, river changes and other important developments that greatly affect the fishing.
Knowing where to access the Salmon River and other Lake Ontario tributaries, water levels and which species are moving upstream and other factors that change rapidly are key to success during the fall tributary runs.
