A few ticks and tocks before my finger stretched out to push “send to press” on the most recent print issue of Michigan Outdoor News, a line written by DNR’s Andy Henion caught a side-eye and my brain slammed the brakes on my button pusher.
“For the first time, researchers from Michigan State University and the Michigan DNR have successfully estimated Michigan’s wolf population using remote cameras deployed throughout the Upper Peninsula,” Henion’s piece read.

For redears and bass, Nimisila Reservoir is a solid bet in northern Ohio
Many of Ohio’s inland lakes that were once stocked with walleyes today have more saugeyes swimming in their waters.
The theory is that the sauger-walleye hybrids survive better in turbid water conditions and they can be produced relatively easily in Ohio hatcheries. Therefore, many lakes that were once stocked annually with walleyes have now been transformed into saugeye fisheries. But, Nimisila Reservoir in northeast Ohio has experienced just the opposite effect over the past couple of decades, but for different reasons.

Former Ohio Division of Wildlife chiefs reflect on their experience in the role
In the midst of the 2026 Ohio State Fair, a sportmen’s summer celebration was held at the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Natural Resources Park on the state fairgrounds.
The event was hosted by ODNR Director Mary Mertz, Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) Chief Kendra Wecker and fellow staff members. Attendees moved from the registration area to the Natural Resources Amphitheater at 6 p.m. where the event’s featured speakers included three former DOW chiefs.

Ohio’s young shotgunners win big at SCTP nationals
A number of young shotgunners from throughout the state of Ohio stood atop the podium at the 2026 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) National Championships recently. The SCTP Championships were held at the Cardinal Shooting Center from July 10 to July 18.
More than 3,000 shooters, along with parents, grandparents, coaches, and spectators gathered at Cardinal Center to compete and enjoy everything shotgunning.

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves celebrated the opening of its 156th state nature preserve recently in Adams County.
Plum Run Prairie harbors significant prairie and cedar barren habitats and more than 30 rare and state-listed plants and animals across 139 acres in southwestern Ohio.
