Growing up, my friends and I fished for just two species. In the spring, it was trout, and in the summer, it was bass. Pocono mountain streams were our go-to spots for trout with the Lehigh River, Broadhead, and Tobyhanna creeks leading the list as favorite trout fishing destinations.
After school was out in June, the Susquehanna River was our choice destination for smallmouth bass fishing.

A concept known as the shifting baseline syndrome (SBS) is pivotal to our understanding game and fish species and how they are managed.
SBS refers to the phenomenon in which each generation accepts the condition of the natural world they grow up in as “normal,” even if ecosystems have significantly declined over time. In 1995 a fisheries scientist named Daniel Pauly coined the SBS term to illustrate how people underestimate long-term environmental loss because they compare present conditions to their own memory rather than to historical abundance.

As far as Northwoods fishing destinations go, a small lake in Wisconsin’s Taylor County probably isn’t on anyone’s list.
Except mine, and that’s the way I want it to stay. On paper, the 23-acre lake in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Taylor County may not seem like a big deal. It’s a different story in person, however.
